Cleaning My Makeup Brushes feat. New Set for Under $20!

March 10, 2019 Leave a Comment

I get asked about my makeup brushes fairly often. Which brush I use for which area of the face, what solution I use to clean them, and if there’s anything else in addition to the cleaning solution that I use. So, I thought I would do a quick little post about some of my favourite brushes, including a new synthetic set of brushes I bought on Amazon, how I clean them, what I have tried in the past, and so on.

Most (if not all) of my makeup brushes are made of synthetic fibres. Some of my brushes I have had for quite a while and to be honest I don’t remember if they are synthetic or not but I always choose synthetic over animal hair. Not only for their performance but also because I shop cruelty free and vegan quite often. It is one of my goals for 2019 to have all of my makeup be at the very least cruelty free.

So, if you want to try cleaning your brushes in a very simple way like I do, you’ll need a few things.

  1. Blue dawn dish soap (the size in the photo is actually from the dollar store. I love the smell of this dish soap)
  2. A small bowl
  3. A silicone brush cleaning mat or glove
  4. Paper towels
  5. 70% rubbing alcohol

I tend to like to set up at my kitchen table to do this. I take each brush (maybe more than one if it’s my smaller brushes) and dip the top of the bristles, being careful not to dip them too far down, into the dish soap.

Then, I swirl the brush onto the cleansing mat. I actually got mine at Clare’s at the mall on a total whim for about $7, but there are lots of variations out there. This mat has a couple different ridge sizes for different size brushes which I like. For a brush this size, I might use both sides because it’s a fairly tightly packed brush.

Some people would swirl their brushes into an olive oil and dish soap mixture, which I used to do too- but I think I prefer cleaning my brushes without the oil because I find that it can leave an oily residue. Since I use my brushes on other people as well as myself, I do wash my brushes more often than other people probably do, so I may use a bit of oil to condition them every couple washes but I don’t like to do it every time.

I love seeing all the makeup come out when I swirl them on the mat. Then, I rinse the brushes under lukewarm water. Too hot or cold isn’t ideal for any makeup brush, so I like to keep it right in the middle. This will keep your brush bristles softer for much longer. I also rinse the cleansing mat after every one or two brushes depending on how much makeup I see sitting there.

After I have washed all of my brushes, I mold the bristles back the way they look when they are dry and lay them flat on a clean towel. Never store your clean brushes upright when they are drying because water will run down into the barrel of the brush which will shorten the life of your brushes. I usually use the paper towel to lay the dirty brushes down and sometimes if I’m only doing a spot clean on brushes I have only used on myself and will only use on myself until the next full brush collection wash, I’ll dip in the dish soap, swirl on the paper towel, rinse and lay out. This doesn’t happen nearly as often as me just washing all of my brushes though. Then, after they are all dry or mostly dry, I give all the brushes a few mists of 70% alcohol just to kill any leftover germs.

Right now, I am in the midst of trying and ordering new brushes so I will have to come and do another post in a couple months about some new brushes I am waiting on after I have had time to play around with them a little bit. However, these are two brands that I use constantly and absolutely love and they do not break the bank.

  1. Real Techniques- synthetic brushes that were created by two sisters from England on Youtube. Their original channel is called Pixiwoo. You can get their brushes at Walmart and Rexall in sets or individually and in the states I know that ULTA has a great variety as well. Of course you can also buy online through their online store. I have had most of them for years now. Going on 4 or 5 years. They clean easily, they don’t shed, and they are so multi functional. They also make their own version of a brush cleaning tile.
  2. E.L.F Cosmetics – I believe they do have synthetic and natural hair brushes but I have only purchased their synthetic brushes and I love them. They are so reasonably priced and you can find a wide selection of them at Walmart. That pretty clear and silver one in the photo above is one of theirs and I love it. I use it mostly for highlighting. They make their own version of a makeup brush cleaning palette too but it’s more like a brush cleaning glove.

Here is the set of brushes I bought on Amazon from Bestope. They felt so soft when I opened them so I was excited to try these! I washed them with this lot of brushes and they still feel just as soft and I haven’t noticed any shedding which is a good sign. This set was on sale for $14.99 when I purchased it! Can’t go wrong with that.

There was also a package insert that had suggestions for what to use each brush for, which is great for anyone just starting out with applying makeup or using different types of brushes for more advanced looks. Whenever I get new brushes, I play around with them and I use whichever brush works best for me for whichever part of my face I am working on.

They feel so soft on the skin and I would never guess that they are as inexpensive as they are. There is also a wide variety of brushes for eyes and face which makes it a pretty versatile set. I especially love picking up brush sets like this because I always need extra brushes- especially for the eyes. Bonus points if they feel like professional brushes but cost a quarter of the price!

What are some of your favourite brushes? I’d love to hear from you.

Top 20 Under $20 (Collab w/ Beauty by Birdy)

February 21, 2019 Leave a Comment

For my last post, I shared some of my favourite splurge worthy cosmetic items with you so for this post I thought I would explore the opposite end of the spectrum and talk to you about some of my favourite less expensive items- under $20! Now, I will be talking about 10 of my favourite products here and then I collaborated with Beauty by Birdy, who will be talking about 10 of her favourites under $20 as well! So don’t forget to head over to Kelly’s page and check out her list. I will link her post for you guys here. I have known Kelly for years and she actually helped me to get my website up and running (because she’s such a sweetheart!) so we thought it would be fun to work on this together! I hope you enjoy both our posts and find something that you may want to give a try- even on a budget!

1. Invisibobble ($10.00-3 pack)

Okay so- please just open another tab right now and go to Amazon and order a three pack of these bad boys. Just do it and you can thank me later. These hair elastics have changed the game. For $10, you can get a pack of 3 from Sephora and Amazon. Those are the two places I choose to buy from them from because as I was discussing with my friend last week- the imposters are NOT the same! The invisibobble holds a ton of hair (and well, I should add), you get far less headaches, less breakage and split ends, and they leave no marks on your hair. As someone who wears their hair up often and wears it up in a big loose bun to sleep, these are forever my hair elastic of choice!

2. Wet N Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder in Precious Petals ($6.99)

I feel like this goes without saying, but I have tried lots of highlighting products. I have tried powders, creams, bronzers, liquids, and blushes that give the highlighted and dewy effect. This one definitely deserves a shoutout. It gives a beautiful glow without adding sparkle or glitter, and it applies to evenly and effortlessly. I picked mine up at Walmart for I believe $7, but the website link is showing a different price so I will give you guys the link for another website to buy it from here. They have a few different shades available now, but this one is my favourite because it’s the most versatile. I can use this when I’m very fair and when I have a bit more colour in the summer months.

3. Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso ($9.97)

So, as far as I know…Milani is new to us in Canada. Maybe I’m wrong, but regardless I am happy to have discovered that it is now available to us. I found this blush at Shoppers drug mart on a whim, but I was just looking to give you guys a link and I found that Milani is also available through Walmart. I am so happy I finally got to try this formula after hearing the girls I watch on youtube rave about it for years. It certainly lived up to it’s promise. It looks so radiant on the cheeks and the colour is very pigmented. A little bit of this blush goes along way so use with a light hand! Typically I gravitate towards cool tone blushes, but I just love the warm glow of this one. I am looking forward to trying some of the other shades of blushes in this collection.

4. Nyx Butter Gloss ($8.00)

There are so many product lines that are easily accessible now that were so difficult to come by a few years ago and Nyx is one of them. I used to have my best friend who was living in BC at the time buy these butter glosses at London Drugs- which I assume is the Shopper’s Drug mart of the west coast. Now there is a NYX store in Mississauga and you can buy it at Shoppers drug mart, as well as online right here! Anyway, sorry for that little rant. These glosses were worth all of the hoop jumping that my friend and I went through. I am not typically a fan of lip gloss to be honest. I usually just find them to be more bothersome than anything. I prefer a balm or a lipstick. These are the exception for me. They are so incredibly soft on the lips, so comfortable to wear, and they smell so yummy. I have about 8 shades- my favourite being creme brule which is a great nude that I wear alone, or with a lipstick or lip liner. They are most definitely my favourite lip gloss of all time.

5. Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Pioneer ($9.96)

I bought my first one of these lipsticks at Christmas time. I am a sucker for wanting a new holiday red every year. I picked up the colour Pioneer and I really like it. The formula is great because it’s long lasting but I don’t find it to be drying. Whenever I use a liquid lipstick I try to put a balm underneath a little while before I apply my lipstick, and I did the same with this one and it lasted longer than any other liquid lipstick I have used! Great value for a low price! I picked mine up at Walmart.

6. Maybelline Total Temptation Brow Definer in 305 Soft Brown ($9.96)

I love this brow pencil! reminds me a lot of the brow definer by Anastasia Beverly Hills but it’s less than half the price. It’s a thicker pencil that glides on really easily and I can fill my brows in so quickly. It has a small spoolie on the other end of the retractable pencil to make blending more convenient. I believe there are four colour options available- I chose the soft brown because I would always rather build up the lighter colour than be stuck with a dark colour that I have to soften. I am so happy to have found an inexpensive eyebrow pencil that I love- for myself and my clients.

7. Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater ($11.00)

You guys know how much I love this facial spray because I mentioned it in my first post about winter skincare. Not only do I use this to moisturize and tone, but I also use it as a final step in my makeup application process. I spray it on my face after I have finished my skincare routine, whether at night or in the morning, and again after my makeup is complete and one extra time after I have set my whole face with setting powder. I find it helps to make my skin look dewy and not powder-y or cake-y.

8. Schmidt Deodorant ($15.29)

Ever since it leaked that deodorant is chalk full of dangerous ingredients- cancer causing ingredients- I have been obsessed with finding a natural alternative. After trying I would say 5 or 6, I stumbled across this gem. Now, I have bought it on Amazon a couple times and I definitely will again, but I want to let you guys know that I can often find it at Winners, Homesense, or Marshall’s in the section where you find body lotions and soaps. When I luck out and find it there, it’s usually about $7.00 and they have different scents as well. A month ago I picked it up in the scent rose vanilla. It protects against odours like no deodorant I have ever used and because of it’s gentle formula, my sensitive skin is not bothered by it in the slightest. It’s the best natural deodorant and my hunt has been over for a few years now.

9. Physicians Formula Butter Highlighter in Pearl ($15.99)

For my dry skin, this highlighter is like a dream. I will be honest- I have only been using this highlighter for about a week but in that short time it has become one of my favourites. The formula is so interesting- it feels wet to the touch but it applies like a powder that still gives me a beautiful glow-y highlight. It’s such a hydrating formula- packed with murumuru butter, capuacu butter, and tucuma butter which gives it that melted into the skin look. I layer it with other highlighters that have more of a pink or gold tone because it’s basically white and I love the finish. It will be a new staple in my collection- I can’t wait to try the other shades.

10. Nyx Wonder Pencil ($6.00)

I love this handy, multifunctional little pencil. I use it to highlight my brow bone, spot conceal on the go, and as a reverse lip liner. It’s a staple in my makeup kit now as it’s so versatile. I got mine in light, but It comes in a couple different shades on their website as well for different skin tones. The packaging has changed since I purchased mine, so they do look different now in case you visit the website link I gave you and notice they look different.

Thanks for stopping in. Please let us know what some your favourite products under $20 are- I’m always looking for new things to try!

SOME SPLURGE WORTHY MAKEUP

February 7, 2019 Leave a Comment

Some of my favourite youtube videos or blog posts are ones that feature high end skincare or cosmetics that are actually worth spending the money. So, I thought I would talk about some of my all time favourite high end items- because everyone has a few items they tend to splurge on- whether its only on foundation or mascara, that’s just the reality I think. Maybe you’re looking to try something new that costs a little more and if so I hope this post helps you out!

Arbonne CC Cream

I love this cc cream. The coverage is perfect for everyday and I also use this when I am going out during the colder months because it doesn’t make me look dry like some foundations do. I apply this with my hands more often than not, I find the warmth of my hands really melts the product into my skin so it literally just looks like a better version of my skin. Sometimes I add a couple drops of argan oil in with it before I apply it on my face.

Eyenvy Mascara

I use this mascara on a daily basis. I do carry the EyEnvy line in my shop- including the mascara and for those of you who aren’t familiar, EyEnvy mascara and growth serum both contain a blend of ingredients to help grow your eyelashes and eyebrows. You can apply a few layers to your lashes and it still does not clump. It conditions the lashes and before you know it your lashes are longer and thicker.

First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy

I first started using this product when my daughter was probably about 5 months old. Pre sleep training. Which equaled no sleep for any of us in this house…and I was back to work when Quinn was a newborn. So, I was looking on Sephora’s website for something that would brighten my under eye area like an eye cream, but offer some coverage as well. So, it ended up being Eye Duty Triple Remedy by First Aid Beauty,$45 to the rescue. The rounded metal applicator feels so cool and refreshing under the eyes which, I love. The brightening effect it gives paired with the sheer coverage was exactly what I was looking for and now it’s one of my favourites. You can still use concealer on top of it if you want extra coverage too.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder

If you are looking for a luxurious setting powder, look no further than the Hourglass veil translucent setting powder, $55. It really does act like a subtle veil by blurring imperfections, setting concealer and foundation all day without clinging to dry patches or creasing. I never find this powder to look powdery or cake-y. Another thing I appreciate about it is that when I  try and get powder out of the jar to apply it, it only spills out a small amount which greatly prevents waste of the product. How nice of them! 😉

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Luminous Light

One of my absolute favourite highlighters is the Hourglass ambient lighting powder in luminous light, $58. I use it in EVERY single wedding I do because it sits so nicely on the skin. It does not have sparkle… it just looks like you are beaming from within and compliments almost every skin tone.

Here’s a few tips to try when applying this highlighter. The first one is- after you have applied it to your desired areas, take a damp beauty sponge and dab over those areas. It gives the illusion of an even more natural highlight as it almost melts the highlighter into the skin. Second tip- apply this highlighter BEFORE you apply your bronzer and blush. I have done this on several occasions and I still dab my damp beauty sponge all over the area to achieve a seamless look. I would say to try the second tip if you are just starting to use a highlighter- because having the highlight underneath will look a bit more subtle but still with that pretty glow. If you try these out, let me know how they work for you!

Too Faced Born This Way Super Coverage Concealer

There are a few high end concealers that I would recommend to you guys but this is the one I have tried most recently and it is probably one of my all time favourites. It is the Born This Way Super Coverage Concealer, $36. It offers amazing coverage, and you only need a very small amount to achieve it so this (huge) bottle will last you forever! It does not cling to dry patches and my under eye area appears hydrated. I should also add that there are 20 shades for you to choose from!

Lorac Pro Palette

I ventured to ULTA across the border to get this bad boy. I knew I wanted the Lorac Pro Palette, $44 USD after seeing so many girls on youtube using it was totally worth it. I have used it on so many people for so many occasions. With a row of matte shades and a row of shimmer shades, all on the neutral side, I find myself constantly reaching for this one. The one flaw – that brutal packaging. That black finish that is impossible to wipe clean. Why? Why do companies use that material?! It drives me nuts. Are you guys with me on this?

Anastasia Modern Renaissance Palette

I feel as though most people have used at least one product by Anastasia- most likely the Brow Wiz. The Modern Renaissance Palette, $55 is another palette I reach for constantly, whether I’m using it on myself or others. There is a nice variety of tones making it very versatile and flattering on many skin types. Her eyeshadows blend out really nicely and her palettes also come with a double ended brush- such a nice bonus!

Urban Decay Naked Basics 2

Urban Decay’s palettes are awesome- the colours are pigmented and long lasting. Their Naked palettes are definitely considered cult classics- and their Naked Basics 2 ,$36 still one of my absolute favourites. I use these shades for everyday when I am working or going to meet a friend for lunch as well as when I am going “out.” Which, is rare. But still. The colours are mainly cool toned, matte yet very versatile, applying so easily and blending out seamlessly.

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush

This cute little blush was part of my birthday gift from Sephora a few years back and I just love it. The full size blush is $38. It is extremely long wearing and the amazonian clay actually helps to control oil and infuse moisture. It is so soft to apply to the cheeks and it blends seamlessly. I love using my highlighter under these blushes for a natural and radiant glow.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer in Park Ave Princess

I also received the mini of this bronzer in my birthday gift from Sephora and it has been one of my favourites ever since. The full size bronzer is $38 and it does last forever because you use so minimal. The colour pay off is really nice and it applies evenly with no sparkle. I love using it when I just want to warm up my skin a little bit and not necessarily for when I want to create a contour. The size is also perfect for on the go!

Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Precision Liquid Liner

The Tarte lights, camera, lashes precision liquid liner, $24 is a rich luxurious black, long wearing, vegan, and easy to apply. If you want to start using a liquid eyeliner and you’re wondering which one you should invest in- I would suggest this one. Plus, I love supporting vegan brands any chance I get!

What are your favourite splurge worthy makeup items? Let me know.

Winter Skincare Go-To’s

January 30, 2019 Leave a Comment

Welcome back!

I should start by saying that this is definitely not a complete list of my winter skincare –  by any means. I just wanted to share with you guys some multi functional products that you may find handy during this all of a sudden, insanely cold and snowy winter! I think I will just have to do another post including specific facial skin care products.

Let’s just jump right in with the items I have been loving from Lush.

Now, if you haven’t tried any of the sleepy products from Lush, you are missing out. The beautiful lavender colour that you see in the shower gel bottle (the body lotion is the same colour, just FYI) alludes perfectly to the dreamy lavender smell combined with notes of ylang ylang.

I bought Sleepy body lotion first, upon recommendation from a good friend and fellow mom and blogger Jenny Lake. I saw the dreamy purple colour and I was so intrigued because I love lavender and then I went to the Lush store it was all over. I originally purchased it to help me fall back asleep after waking up with my infant daughter multiple times a night when she was younger, and I actually never ended up using it for that. Instead, I chose to make it part of my daughter’s bedtime routine. I apply it to her chest every night before putting on her pyjamas. At least this way I still get to enjoy the smell!

Once I discovered I loved the body lotion, I decided to try Sleepy shower gel  and was happy to find that the shower gel is actually more of a cream. I don’t know about you guys, but when I see a shower gel that looks creamy, I automatically assume it will be more hydrating and make my skin super soft. Well, this was no exception. The oat milk in the shower gel also makes it soothing for eczema which I tend to experience during the colder months. I love the way it makes my skin feel, and the scent just puts you in a wonderfully calm state before bed. FYI- for the bath lovers- it makes incredible bubbles! I use it in my daughter’s baths now too.

Now that I have expressed my love for the sleepy line, I will touch on that adorable little bumblebee you see in the photos. This little guy is also from Lush and is called a Scrubee I know that this one looks virtually untouched- and that’s because this one is. I was given this one for Christmas from my sister and her husband and I was so thankful to receive this replacement. I had purchased one for myself in the past and I kind of forgot to repurchase it. I am horrible at remembering to exfoliate in the shower- I don’t know why. Most likely because my hair tends to steal focus (my new hair routine post is coming soon- and it will be a long one!) However, with this little bumblebee, I will exfoliate much more regularly and I will definitely notice the difference in my skin. While I remember how well it removes all the dead skin, it also hydrates amazingly well with honey, coconut, and shea butter. And well, it’s so cute. What can I say, I’m a sucker for packaging and/or appearance of the product.

On the note of moisturizing, let me introduce these powerhouses that you may or may not already be familiar with.

Argan oil is no stranger to the beauty scene. However, I have never purchased Argan oil on it’s own. The last product I bought that had argan oil in it was Moroccan oil and that was for my hair. This time around, I wanted to purchase argan oil in it’s purest form so that I could use it for my skin as well as my hair. When I purchased it, I was careful to find pure argan oil and not that one has any additives in it- especially silicones. This one has been great. Not only have I used it on my face, my body, and my hair, but I have also used it as a carrier oil to mix with lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint oils for the bottoms of our feet and our chests to help combat the illnesses that have been ongoing this fall and winter in our house. Now, a little secret for you guys. The Cetaphil moisturizing cream you see pictured mixed with 5 or 6 drops of this argan oil has been amazing for the dry skin on my hands. Dry is an understatement. Between bathing my daughter, washing my hands constantly because of my job, and doing dishes- my hands are on fire! I’m certain I am not alone on this one. I also love to use this oil all over my face before I go to bed. It absorbs really well and moisturizes wonderfully.

The Cetaphil moisturizing lotion claims to be a non greasy formula, moisturizing enough for the roughest spots like hands, feet, and elbows but also great as an overnight facial moisturizer. I won’t lie, I hesitated to put this on my face because it such a thick lotion but then when I actually tried it I was pleasantly surprised. I like to mix this with the argan oil for my face as well as my hands on the coldest nights- or even when I run out and do errands and the windchill is brutal. I used to use this cream without the oil and it worked great but the argan oil just blends perfectly with it and I like it under my makeup to give it that dewy look that the winter tries so viciously to take away from me. This cream has also worked really well to help clear up the eczema flare ups on my cheeks that the cold weather brings.

Keeping with theme of oil, the Yes to coconut oil stick is a great addition to winter skincare. I’ll be honest- typically I am not a huge fan of coconut oil. I find it just sits on top of my skin rather than absorbing and it doesn’t provide the amount of hydration that my skin needs (even in the summertime). However, I found this at Wal-Mart one day and decided to give it a shot because the formula looked much thicker than regular coconut oil. I find myself reaching for this specifically for my cuticles, or excessively dry or flaky areas that need just a little bit of extra hydration. It’s a great formula that melts into the skin just as coconut oil does but the thicker consistency makes it much more hydrating I find. I have even used this on my face when I get dry red patches- usually hormonal and just above my jawline. I also love the stick form- just so convenient to take with you in your purse even.

Last but definitely not least, another one of my winter (and all year round, really) favourites is the Mario Badescu Facial Spray. As you can see, I am getting dangerously low to the bottom of this bottle so after I have completed this post I think I need to reorder! This spray is so lovely for a couple reasons. I use it after I have cleansed my face and before my moisturizer, and because the air is currently so dry, I sometimes do another spray at the very end. I also love to use it when I am doing my makeup. I spray it all over my face once my foundation, concealer, and any powders to set my makeup have been applied. I spray a generous amount all over my face, let it dry, and then I proceed with my bronzer, blush, and highlighter. This gives my skin that radiance that I love so much. Not only do I do this for myself, and also for my clients. It gives the foundation such a healthy glow and I have yet to meet a client that didn’t love the payoff it gives.

That’s all for my winter skin go to’s! I hope you guys liked this post and please let me know what your holy grail winter skincare products are!

WELCOME!

January 19, 2019 Leave a Comment

Hello all!

Well, welcome to my new adventure!

I am so excited to start blogging and to be using this whole site as my new space to share so much with you guys. I am sure that the site will continue to grow and change as I do and as my business does, but for now I am pretty happy with it. Plus, I’m sure I will learn more tech savvy things as I go along and play with the options and such.

While I have your attention… this might be a great time to go ahead and ask you- what do you want to see in a blog post? Is there anything specifically you would like to see me write about? I know I have had some clients tell me they want to see videos (this is in the works as well- which is why you see a youtube social media icon in a few different spots on my page) on how I apply eyeshadow or how I apply skin makeup. I am really excited to start doing videos with content like that. I think the next post I do will feature some of my fall and winter favourites 🙂

Thank you so much for taking the time to look around my new website, and I hope you continue to stop by and see what’s going on. Remember, I will be posting here about new services I plan to introduce this spring as well as new retail items that I will be getting in over the next couple months.
